How to Prepare Stems Before Sending a Mix
A simple checklist for naming, exporting, and organizing stems before a professional mix session.
The cleaner the handoff, the more time the mix can spend on emotion instead of repair.
Clean stems make a mix session faster and more accurate. Before sending files, export every track from the same start point, remove unused muted material, and label each file clearly.
Group related sounds where it makes sense, but keep lead vocals, doubles, harmonies, drums, bass, and key musical parts separate. If a sound relies on a creative effect, print a wet version and include a dry backup.
Send a rough bounce, tempo, key, reference tracks, and a short note explaining what should feel most important in the final record. Those details help the engineer make decisions that serve the song rather than guessing from files alone.
